ISTE Standard 6b and 6c

Writer's picture: Julia HernandezJulia Hernandez

Standard 6b and 6c for ISTE standards for educators says: "Manage the use of technology and student learning strategies in digital platforms, virtual environments, hands-on makerspaces or in the field." and "Create learning opportunities that challenge students to use a design process and computational thinking to innovate and solve problems."

I feel like this video really represents these standards. The subject of this video is a lesson plan that teaches computational thinking to young children. During the course of the video, the students learn that in order to solve a large problem that they need to break it down into smaller ones first. After they learn this idea, they then apply it to their understanding of a few prompts that have a person describe a game and how to play it in vague terms. These students then have to take these prompts and design their own game that they feel like fits the prompts from the piece of paper. This matches all of the requirements from this standard and is a great lesson to use when teaching these ideas.

I like how this video breaks down the steps for the children to follow easily and how the children can solve large problems by solving smaller ones first. This is of course, a great video that displays computational thinking and helps young children to develop that skill.
